Stop Press: Virus Wipes Out Entire Team!

Well it’s been a while so I thought I’d update you all on how we’re getting along. When we first set out creating a media agency vibe in the suburbs all was well in the world. It still is! We’re still cooking on gas and bringing some savvy marketing skills to the suburban masses!

We’re currently 90% of the way through re-developing our Content Management System but fate has kicked us in the ass and the team has dropped like flies over the last two weeks thanks to a nasty little bug that danced it’s way merrily across the office.

One of the downsides of working in a small office, well it’s no that small but we’re close put it that way. And not in that way either, we’re in close proximity to each other! Enough with the double entendre.

Anyway, our sister company Bytehouse decided it’d be a wheeze if one of them picked up a nasty flu virus, take a few days off work to foster and nurture the little bad boy and then come back sniffling and sneezing and infect us all!!

So my production team, including myself, has been summarily incapacitated over a period of 4 weeks which has dented my progress in bringing new shinies into Suburbia!

Nevertheless we press on regardless, we’ve one week to go before we’re meant to go live with our reskinned and usable content management system. A lot of work, blood, sweat and tears has already gone into trying to make it as usable as possible. It’s going to be a big ask to get it out next week so that’s a bit of a panic but I have all fingers and toes crossed and hope it rolls out to much applause next friday.

Although, ironically, next friday is 31st…Halloween!, which naturally spell impending doom so no doubt one of us will come down from ebola or something equally nasty following an unfortunate incident where an escaped baboon terrorises a small provincial town….or something.

The weekend is here , time to relax before the big week ahead.

Cake! (Adventures in CakePHP).

PHP, as a serious programming language, has been given a new lease of life in the last few year (or is that a stay of execution?). With the rise in popularity of Ruby on Rails, many other RAD (Rapid Application Development) frameworks have also come into being. Some of these are based on good ol’ PHP, such as CakePHP, CodeIgniter and Symfony to name but three.

Essentially these frameworks give structure to your web apps and speed up development by helping out with some of the donkey work of coding.

Some of our sites require bespoke solutions that are lightweight, structured and scalable. This is where CakePHP comes in.

Over the next few weeks I hope to bring you some of my experiences in developing with CakePHP in the form of some tutorials, tip and observations, that hopefully will help someone out.

To answer one obvious question; why did I choose CakePHP over all the other PHP frameworks kicking around at the moment? In my opinion it offers the best balance of power, flexibility and ease of development. It’s also the one I got the best ‘feel’ for, a gut reaction if you like, after looking into both Cake and CI.

Worthy of note, and this will come as no suprise to users of Cake or CI, is that Cake’s documentation isn’t the greatest at the moment. Although it’s improving all the time, this has already given rise to a fair deal of frustration. Hopefully I can ease some of that frustration for others with these articles. We shall see.
